Kawhi Leonard trade to Raptors completed after NBA investigation

Résumé

The NBA confirmed that Kawhi Leonard has been traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Toronto Raptors following the league's investigation and related penalties.

The NBA announced that the trade sending Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Toronto Raptors was finalized on Monday. The transaction, first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, involved the Raptors receiving Leonard in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a pick-swap arrangement, completed on June 30.

The deal was delayed while the league investigated alleged salary-cap violations by Leonard and the Clippers. The NBA issued penalties to both parties on Sept. 2, after which the Clippers approved the trade.

"I am accepting the league's punishment," Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said on Sunday night.

Leonard’s representatives indicated that he would consider only an extension with Toronto, and discussions on a new contract were expected to begin shortly after the trade. Leonard previously played for the Raptors in the 2018-19 season, helping the team win its first championship and earning Finals MVP honors.

In his most recent season with the Clippers, Leonard averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 50.5 percent from the field. The Raptors finished the prior season with a 46-36 record and secured a playoff spot, led by All-Star Scottie Barnes.
