Texas overtakes Notre Dame for top spot in USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank after comeback win
Texas moved to No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank following a fourth-quarter comeback victory over Ohio State, while Ohio State fell to No. 6.
Texas claimed the No. 1 ranking in the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank after defeating Ohio State 24-23 in a fourth-quarter comeback. The Longhorns trailed 23-3 early in the final quarter before scoring three consecutive drives to secure the win. Ohio State dropped to No. 6, with Notre Dame remaining at No. 2, Georgia at No. 3, Indiana at No. 4 and Miami at No. 5.
The updated top five also kept Ohio State ahead of LSU, which fell after a narrow opening-game victory over Clemson was devalued by LSU’s subsequent loss to Georgia Southern. Four new teams entered the top 25: Michigan at No. 18, Duke at No. 21, Missouri at No. 22 and James Madison at No. 25. Michigan re-entered after a 17-10 win over Oklahoma, while Oregon fell from the top 30 after a 39-31 loss to Oklahoma State.
"The Longhorns’ performance down the stretch warrants the move ahead of the Fighting Irish," a spokesperson for the ranking system said.
The changes reflect results from the second week of the college football season.
