Trump says AI development will bring more benefits than risks, rejects calls for slowdown

Résumé

President Donald Trump affirmed that artificial intelligence will deliver greater benefits than harms, countering recent appeals from Anthropic’s chief executive for a development pause.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday that artificial intelligence will produce "more good than bad" and that the United States is poised to lead the technology race. When asked whether he had heard directly from AI industry leaders, Trump said the country’s advantage in AI is decisive and that whoever wins the AI competition will win overall.

The comments came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging a blanket slowdown in AI development and warning that a Chinese lead in the field could pose a grave danger to the United States and the world. Amodei also called for stricter limits on exporting AI chips to China. China’s foreign ministry dismissed the remarks as fearmongering, with spokesperson Guo Jiakun saying that such rhetoric would disrupt global AI governance.

The debate has intensified following a former Anthropic employee’s public claim that the company was "gambling with our lives" in its research, and statements from other AI researchers about the existential risks of advanced AI systems.
