Swedish election results show left bloc holding narrow three-seat lead

Résumé

With 95% of votes counted, the centre-left opposition bloc led by Magdalena Andersson is ahead of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing alliance by three seats, though final results are expected later this week.

Stockholm – Preliminary counts covering 95% of Sweden’s parliamentary election indicate that the centre-left bloc headed by Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson holds a three-seat advantage over the four-party right-wing alliance led by incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The 349-seat Riksdag is projected to give Andersson’s bloc 176 seats and Kristersson’s coalition 173, with the remaining votes to be tallied by Wednesday.

Both leaders are expected to begin coalition talks with smaller parties to secure a governing majority. An official familiar with the process said Kristersson is likely to approach the liberal Centre party in an effort to shift it from Andersson’s camp before seeking a confidence vote on his continued premiership, a vote that could take place in two weeks.

Andersson told reporters that the early results point to a “close” outcome but expressed confidence that her bloc could form a new government if the lead holds. Kristersson acknowledged that the tight race would make government formation “complicated,” adding that the left had not secured a majority for its economic programme.

Analysts note that the election is pivotal for Sweden’s political direction. A victory for Andersson would return a centre-left administration, while a win for Kristersson could see the Sweden Democrats, a right-wing party that has previously supported his government, enter the cabinet for the first time.

The final seat distribution will depend on negotiations with smaller parties that often hold decisive sway in Swedish coalition building.
