Clippers owner Steve Ballmer apologizes as team accepts NBA sanctions
Steve Ballmer said the Los Angeles Clippers will comply with NBA penalties, including a $30 million fine and loss of draft picks, and expressed regret for the distraction caused to fans and the league.
Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer issued an apology on X, saying the sanctions imposed by the NBA have created a difficult period for the franchise and its supporters. He expressed regret to fans, employees and fellow owners for the distraction and distress caused.
The league announced penalties for the Clippers after finding violations of salary-cap rules tied to star forward Kawhi Leonard and four affiliated companies. The sanctions include forfeiture of five first-round draft picks, beginning in 2029, and a $30 million fine, the largest in NBA history. Ballmer said the organization has paid the fines, is complying with the penalties and is "moving forward."
"While there are still disagreements concerning the findings in the report, this is not where I want to focus. Team owners should support, not distract," Ballmer added.
The Clippers had previously rejected the NBA’s findings and indicated plans to challenge the report. The league alleged that Ballmer knowingly assisted Leonard in securing off-court income opportunities, among other infractions. Leonard said he had no knowledge of any intent to circumvent the salary cap.
Ballmer concluded that the team will continue to build its roster and invest in the community, asserting confidence that the organization will remain competitive and make its fans proud.
