Jaguars dominate Browns as Watson throws early interception

Résumé

Deshaun Watson's first regular-season pass for Cleveland was intercepted, contributing to a 34-10 loss to Jacksonville, and raising questions about his starting role.

Deshaun Watson threw an interception on Cleveland's opening drive Sunday, a turnover that helped the Jacksonville Jaguars build a 34-10 victory. The Browns' first possession ended when Watson's pass intended for Jerry Jeudy was caught by Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, who returned it to the 41-yard line. Jacksonville scored on the ensuing drive and never looked back.

Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown, one interception, one fumble and was sacked five times. The Browns' only score came late in the fourth quarter after a field goal earlier in the half. Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdown passes for Jacksonville, finishing 18-of-23 for 245 yards.

The loss deepens concerns about Cleveland's season outlook. Head coach Todd Monken said Watson earned the starting job based on his overall body of work, but acknowledged the quarterback's performance was under scrutiny. Watson, who joined the Browns in 2022 amid off-field controversy, has faced boos from fans since his preseason debut.
