Trump urges Ukraine to cease attacks on Russian diesel facilities amid ongoing drone strikes

Summary

President Trump asked Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to stop targeting Russian refineries, while both sides continued drone attacks that killed civilians in Russia and Ukraine.

President Donald Trump, speaking from Ireland during the Irish Open, told reporters that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should halt strikes on Russian diesel production facilities. > "Mr. Zelensky has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia," Trump said, adding that Kyiv should focus on other targets.

Ukraine has recently intensified long-range drone attacks on Russia’s oil and gas infrastructure, which Kyiv says finances its war effort. Russian officials reported that two civilians were killed and 14 injured in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, after a drone struck a tree near a parked car, and a fire broke out at a local industrial site.

Russia also reported drone attacks on the Black Sea port of Odesa and a fire near a border crossing with Poland. The Russian defense ministry said its forces shot down 389 Ukrainian drones overnight, including over Tatarstan and occupied Crimea.

Ukrainian sources claimed a successful strike on a major refinery in Sloviansk-on-Kuban, Krasnodar region, causing a large blaze and injuries, though Russian authorities did not confirm the report.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow remains open to restarting peace talks in the autumn, suggesting October as a possible timeframe. U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have recently met with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders, noting that territorial issues remain the primary obstacle to a settlement.
