Missing 70-Year-Old Hiker Found Alive on Isle Royale After Week-Long Search
Craig Berg, a 70-year-old solo hiker who vanished on September 5 on Isle Royale National Park, was located alive by other backpackers on Saturday.
A week after disappearing on Isle Royale National Park, a 70-year-old hiker was found alive by fellow backpackers on the island. The park announced on its Facebook page Saturday that Craig Berg, missing since September 5, was discovered "alive and alert" by the group.
Berg had been on a solo trek across the Lake Superior island and was scheduled to return to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula by ferry on the day he vanished. When he failed to appear, family members reported him missing, prompting land and air search operations that began on September 6.
Isle Royale, a remote wilderness area without roads or motor vehicles except for two visitor service hubs at its ends, spans roughly 45 miles in length and nine miles in width. Authorities said additional details about the circumstances of the rescue will be released after further investigation.
