Jefferson County coroner confirms first measles-related death in the area
A 40-year-old woman died from complications of measles, marking the first such fatality in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, officials said.
A Pennsylvania coroner confirmed that a 40-year-old woman died on Saturday from complications linked to measles, the first measles-related fatality recorded in Jefferson County. Coroner Greg Furlong said no additional personal details will be released at this time.
"This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease," Furlong said, adding that the family’s privacy should be respected.
Public Relations Officer Jason Stiver emphasized that the case underscores the seriousness of measles and urged residents to recognize symptoms early and follow public-health guidance. He noted that measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe respiratory illness, hospitalization, and, in rare instances, death.
The incident follows two infant deaths from measles complications in Pennsylvania last month, the first measles-related deaths in the state in 35 years.
