Mexican influencer killed in Sonora amid wave of attacks on social media figures

Résumé

Jose Luis Esparza, known as “El Putirrí,” was shot dead at a taco shop in Ciudad Obregón, marking the 20th influencer murder in Mexico since 2024, authorities say the killing may be linked to organized-crime ties.

A 37-year-old Mexican social-media personality was fatally shot at a taquería in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, on Thursday. Jose Luis Esparza, who posted humorous daily-life videos on Instagram and TikTok under the name “El Putirrí,” was attacked by a gunman who entered the restaurant and opened fire before fleeing on a motorcycle with an accomplice. Paramedics treated him at the scene and he was taken to a hospital where he died.

The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident and has not ruled out a connection to the victim’s family ties to criminal groups. Security consultant Iván Moile suggested the influencer could have been a collateral target because of a relative’s involvement with a cartel, saying it may have been intended as a message.

Esparza’s death follows a series of killings of Mexican content creators over the past two years, including TikTok star César Gastélum, who was shot while livestreaming in Culiacán, and beauty-salon influencer Valeria Márquez, who was killed in Zapopan. Analysts note that drug-trafficking organizations have increasingly targeted influencers, either because some serve as money-laundering fronts or because they disseminate information that groups wish to control.

"Drug trafficking groups have set their sights on influencers for several reasons," security analyst David Saucedo said.

Authorities continue to examine whether the murder was directly ordered by a cartel or resulted from broader attempts by criminal groups to influence public narratives.
