Left-handed users raise concerns over iPhone Duo's side-mounted controls

Apple's upcoming $1,999 iPhone Duo faces criticism from left-handed users who say its side-placed Touch ID and other controls favor right-handed operation, prompting calls for a mirrored version or dedicated accessibility options.

Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, priced at $1,999 and featuring a 7.6-inch inner screen, a 5.4-inch outer screen and a titanium body that folds to just over three inches. The company describes the closed device as “compact and comfortable to hold” with essential controls moved to the side for easier reach.

Left-handed users, however, argue that the side-mounted controls, including a Touch ID button that replaces Face ID, are optimized for right-handed use. A Reddit user asked, “Any other southpaws out there that use their phone one-handed with their left?” and expressed doubt that Apple would add a left-handed mode. A YouTube commenter noted that “it’s more than just software, the Touch ID button, the outer display, the cameras… they would have to manufacture a mirrored version for lefties to have the same experience as right-handed people.”

Some users framed the design as a potential accessibility oversight, wondering how the phone would serve people who cannot use their right hand due to injury or disability. Apple does list built-in accessibility tools such as AssistiveTouch, Switch Control, Voice Control and Eye Tracking, but it has not announced a dedicated left-handed mode.

Early hands-on impressions are mixed. A New York Times technology writer described the Duo as extremely thin when opened and “dainty” when folded, comparable in size to a passport. Market analysts note that foldable phones currently represent less than 2% of global mobile sales, but Apple’s entry could expand the segment.

Approximately one in ten people are left-handed, though many left-handed individuals use their right hand for smartphone operation. Some commenters said they would adapt to the new layout, while others said they would not retrain muscle memory. The iPhone Duo is slated for release on October 23, with pre-orders beginning October 16, and Apple has not confirmed whether a left-handed mode will be offered.
