Practical Magic 2 Takes Box-Office Lead, Ending Six-Week Spider-Man Run

Resumen

Warner Bros.' sequel Practical Magic 2 opened at roughly $30 million, overtaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day for the weekend and becoming the top domestic film.

Warner Bros. released Practical Magic 2 to an opening weekend of about $30 million, moving it to the No. 1 spot at the U.S. box office and ending the six-week run of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The sequel earned $13 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and opened in more than 4,000 theaters. It carries a production budget of $75 million.

The film reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the Owens sisters from the 1998 original, with Joey King, Maisie Williams and Lee Pace in supporting roles. While critics have given the movie a 36 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience response is strong, reflected in a B+ CinemaScore and a 93 percent audience rating.

"Practical Magic 2 works better the less you look for any sense of logic, and the more you just lean into the transient joys of watching these two actresses bounce off each other," wrote critic Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is projected to earn about $8.5 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $935.3 million, just shy of the all-time domestic record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey placed third with an estimated $8.1 million, while Universal’s Coyote vs. Acme and Angel Studios’ Runner rounded out the top five.

Other releases included Andrew Garfield’s The Uprising, which earned $1.3 million on Friday and is expected to finish the weekend near $3 million.
