Practical Magic 2 tops Friday box office with $13 million

Resumen

The sequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic earned $13 million on its opening Friday, leading the domestic box office and projected to finish the weekend in first place.

The sequel "Practical Magic 2" earned $13 million on Friday across 4,146 North American screens, placing it at the top of the domestic box office. Industry estimates project the Warner Bros. release will reach roughly $30 million by Sunday, securing the weekend's number-one spot.

The original 1998 film opened with $13 million against a $75 million budget and ultimately grossed $94 million worldwide; it later developed a following after its home-video release. Based on Alice Hoffman's novel, the new film continues the story 25 years later, focusing on the daughters of the original magical sisters. Returning cast members include Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, with Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Maisie Williams, Joey King, Xolo Maridueña and Lee Pace joining the ensemble.

Other releases on Friday included Focus Features' "The Uprising," which earned $1.38 million from 2,068 screens and is expected to total about $3.1 million for the weekend. Angel Studios' action film "Runner" took second place with an estimated $2.5 million, while Universal's "The Odyssey" ranked third with $2.06 million.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" fell to fourth place but continued to generate revenue, posting $2 million in its seventh weekend and aiming for $8.5 million by Sunday. The film is close to the all-time domestic box office record of $936.6 million set by 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Ketchup Entertainment's comedy "Coyote vs. Acme" rounded out the top five, earning about $1.4 million on Friday and projected to finish the weekend with $6.3 million.
