Pink Responds to Backlash Over Macklemore Repost, Defends Jewish Identity

Summary

Singer Pink issued a detailed Instagram statement clarifying her repost of criticism toward Macklemore's pro-Palestine remarks, emphasizing her Jewish background and stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Pink posted a lengthy Instagram message on Friday after receiving criticism for resharing a comment that called for Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour because of his pro-Palestine statements. She said the repost included wording she did not write and expressed a preference to be judged on her own words rather than on others’ edits.

"I was born a Jew. I didn’t pick it, and I’ve never hidden it," she wrote, adding that many had assumed her views without reviewing her past statements. Pink reiterated that she does not speak for Israel or any government, and reiterated her October 2023 comment that Hamas is a terrorist organization while calling for a future for Palestinians that respects their humanity. She highlighted her decade-long work as a UNICEF ambassador for children on both sides of the conflict.

Pink also referenced Macklemore’s 2014 costume controversy, noting that he had apologized at the time. She said his recent stage remarks, which included images of the war and a dedication to a political movement, prompted her repost. She clarified that she is not seeking to silence other artists, demand firings, or obtain refunds, but wants to express her concerns as a Jewish mother without being labeled as propaganda.

The rapper’s comments during his opening set on the Loop Tour included a plea to Jewish audience members that criticism of Israel or apartheid does not equate to criticism of Jews. The Israeli-American Council later circulated a petition to have Mackelore removed from the tour.
