49ers dominate Rams in Week 1, highlighted by Williams, Purdy and Warner

Résumé

San Francisco beat Los Angeles 27-7 in Melbourne, with offensive tackle Trent Williams, quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner singled out as the game’s top performers.

San Francisco posted a 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night in Melbourne, Australia, establishing a strong start to the season. The 49ers’ offense limited the Rams to six pressures and five quarterback hurries, while keeping quarterback Brock Purdy sack-free throughout the game.

Left tackle Trent Williams was credited with neutralizing defensive end Myles Garrett, who recorded only one pressure, one hurry and one sack. The offensive line’s overall performance helped the 49ers control the line of scrimmage.

Purdy recovered from an early interception to complete 12 of 14 passes for three touchdowns, including a 39-yard strike to Demarcus Robinson that gave San Francisco a 10-7 lead, and a late-game 99-yard drive that produced two additional scores.

Linebacker Fred Warner led the defense with 11 tackles and contributed key plays, including a pass breakup on the opening drive and a stop on a Rams quarterback sneak that forced a turnover on downs. Warner also helped seal the win with a forced fumble later in the fourth quarter.

The win moved the 49ers to the top of the early-season standings, while the Rams struggled to generate offensive momentum against a dominant 49ers front line.
