Jimmy Kimmel and ABC negotiate renewal of late-night show

Résumé

ABC and Jimmy Kimmel are in talks to extend the host's contract beyond the 2026-27 season amid declining ad revenue for late-night television.

ABC and Jimmy Kimmel are negotiating a new agreement that could keep the comedian hosting "Jimmy Kimmel Live" after the 2026-27 television season, a source familiar with the discussions said. Neither Disney nor Kimmel’s representatives offered comment, and Kimmel’s agent, James Dixon, was unavailable for comment.

Kimmel shifted from a three-year contract to a one-year deal in 2025, a move analysts say reflects the broader challenges facing late-night programming, including reduced viewership among younger audiences and a drop in advertising spend. Guideline data show total late-night ad expenditures fell to $209 million in 2025 from $519.7 million in 2017, with Kimmel’s show accounting for $51.1 million in 2024, about 21 % of the market.

Despite the overall decline, the show has seen a ratings increase since CBS removed Stephen Colbert’s program in May, potentially allowing higher ad rates. The negotiations are expected to address cost considerations and may explore additional duties for Kimmel, such as hosting special events or game-show formats, similar to arrangements NBC has with Jimmy Fallon.

Disney is currently contesting an FCC order that required early renewal filings for its owned-and-operated stations, alleging the regulator’s actions infringe on First Amendment rights. The dispute adds a regulatory dimension to the renewal talks, as the network balances legal concerns with the financial pressures on its late-night lineup.
