Rams' early celebration fails as 49ers rally for 24-point run in Week 1 showdown in Melbourne

Los Angeles fell behind after a premature celebration, allowing San Francisco to score 24 unanswered points and win the season-opening NFC West game in Australia.

The Los Angeles Rams opened their season against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne with an early lead, but a mis-played interception allowed the 49ers to score and they responded with a 24-point streak to win the game.

Both teams arrived in Australia using different strategies to cope with the 17-hour time difference from California. The 49ers flew out a week before the match to acclimate, while the Rams traveled the day before, hoping to keep their players on West Coast time.

After scoring the first touchdown, the Rams mocked the travel debate with a brief end-zone celebration following a Brock Purdy interception. The celebration was followed by a Rams interception that set up an 86-yard drive ending in a 49ers touchdown. From that point, San Francisco’s defense limited the Rams’ offense, and the 49ers added points on a 99-yard drive and forced two additional turnovers.

"I thought we were ready to go, and obviously we just didn't play good enough," Rams head coach Sean McVay said after the loss.

The result leaves the travel-preparation debate unresolved, as both teams will need to adjust to the time shift for upcoming games.
