Justice Department official Joseph diGenova resigns after losing confidence of DOJ and White House

摘要

Joseph diGenova stepped down from his Justice Department position overseeing a probe into alleged interference with President Trump, after sources said he no longer had the confidence of department and White House officials.

Joseph diGenova has left his role at the Justice Department, where he was overseeing a federal investigation into claims that officials from previous administrations attempted to impede President Donald Trump’s political activities, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Sources said he had been effectively sidelined before his resignation, indicating a loss of confidence from both the department and the White House.

The investigation, based in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Fort Pierce, Florida, has examined whether officials such as former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey were involved in actions to block Trump’s return to office, as well as a separate criminal inquiry into whether Brennan misled Congress about the intelligence community’s assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

DiGenova, who was appointed to lead the probe in April after the removal of career prosecutor Maria Medetis Long, had previously criticized delays in the case and suggested indictments could have been secured within 30 days. He told CBS News that serving the president and the department had been “an honor and a privilege,” and declined further comment on his departure.

His wife, attorney Victoria Toensing, who also works for the Justice Department, is expected to leave the agency later this week, according to CBS News. Their exits leave the future direction of the investigation uncertain.
