Meta asks select Applied AI staff to resume managerial positions

Summary

Meta is offering some Applied AI employees the option to return to management roles after a recent restructuring that flattened teams, part of a broader effort to adjust its AI organization.

Meta has invited a number of individual contributors in its Applied AI (AAI) division to move back into management positions, according to four sources familiar with the plan. The transition is voluntary, and participants can choose whether to accept the managerial role.

The AAI unit, created earlier this year, consolidated about 7,000 staff members, many of whom were reassigned from previous managerial posts to individual contributor jobs.

The shift follows Meta's earlier strategy of reducing middle management and favoring smaller, flatter teams, a model the company has promoted as more efficient. However, the firm eliminated roughly 10% of its workforce this year, with a significant share of the cuts affecting managers, according to analysis of public layoff notices.

Meta declined to comment on the latest staffing changes. The company has previously allowed some employees who were moved to AAI to leave the division after internal criticism over the reassignment process.
