Charlie Hunnam Discusses Meta-Thriller Sons of Anarchy Spinoff "Legends"
Charlie Hunnam explained that the upcoming FX limited series, featuring the original Sons of Anarchy cast playing fictionalized versions of themselves, originated from a series of dreams and is not a continuation of the original show.
FX announced on Aug. 19 that the former Sons of Anarchy drama will return as a limited series titled "Legends," reuniting the original cast in a meta-thriller format. The project will feature actors such as Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi playing fictionalized versions of themselves, confronting a real-world threat after meeting at a fan convention.
Charlie Hunnam, who will reprise his role as Jax Teller and also serves as an executive producer, said the concept emerged from several recurring dreams about the cast reuniting. He told The Hollywood Reporter that the series is "definitely not season eight of Sons of Anarchy" and described it as a "mad adventure" that blurs the line between life and art.
"All I can say is that it’s definitely not season eight of Sons of Anarchy. It’s the same group of actors, but we are all playing ourselves, going on a mad adventure, and coming together after 10 years apart, although maintaining deep friendship in that time," Hunnam said.
Series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved, but his wife Katey Sagal is attached as an executive producer. Sutter publicly gave his blessing, noting he had reviewed the script and found it well-done.
"I gave Charlie my full blessing. I wish nothing but the best for him in this project," Sutter said.
The show will be produced by FX Productions and 20th Television, with additional executive producers Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn. It will air on FX and stream on Hulu.
