The 77-year-old singer disclosed that he had a shunt implanted to treat normal-pressure hydrocephalus, noting improvements in balance and cognition, and said he will continue following medical advice.

Billy Joel revealed on his SiriusXM radio program that he recently underwent brain surgery to treat normal-pressure hydrocephalus, a condition diagnosed in May 2025 that causes cerebrospinal fluid to accumulate in the skull. The procedure involved implanting a shunt to drain excess fluid. Joel said he initially hesitated after learning the surgery required drilling a hole in his skull, but later decided to proceed after researching the potential benefits for balance and memory.

He described symptoms that prompted medical evaluation, including unsteady gait and a sensation of rocking, likening it to being on a boat. Joel noted that doctors warned the loud volume of his performances could act like repeated concussions, potentially damaging brain tissue. Following the operation, he reported improvements and said he is adhering to physical therapy and other medical recommendations.

When asked about future touring, Joel did not provide a definitive timeline, and his publicist did not respond to inquiries. He emphasized his intention to recover fully and continue his career, stating, "I’m not going anywhere. I’m still here."
