US, UK and Norway intercept Russian submarines training to sabotage Arctic undersea cables

摘要

American, British and Norwegian forces stopped Russian submarines that were simulating a cable-disruption operation near Svalbard, highlighting growing concerns over undersea infrastructure security.

American, British and Norwegian naval units intercepted Russian submarines conducting a training exercise near the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic this spring. According to two Western officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the vessels were part of a drill by Russia’s GUGI undersea warfare directorate that simulated the deployment of a technology intended to disable subsea communication cables.

The joint operation tracked the Russian vessels and prevented them from completing the simulated deployment before they left the area. Norway’s defence minister said the mission sent a clear message that covert attempts to target critical infrastructure would be detected and met with consequences.

The cables in question include two fiber-optic lines linking Svalbard to mainland Norway, which lie up to 2,700 metres below the sea surface and carry data from the SvalSat satellite ground station. No actual damage to the cables was reported.

Western officials noted that the incident occurs amid broader concerns that Russia may increase sabotage activities against European infrastructure, potentially testing NATO’s collective defence commitments. The United States, United Kingdom and Norway have previously reported similar covert operations and have stepped up patrols and monitoring of undersea assets in the region.

Russia’s defence ministry did not comment on the incident, and the Kremlin continues to deny involvement in sabotage operations against NATO members.
