Seahawks edge Patriots 13-10 in season opener as Sam Darnold exits with hip injury
Seattle defeated New England 13-10 in Week 1, but quarterback Sam Darnold left the game early with a hip injury, and the Patriots' quarterback Drake Maye threw three interceptions.
Seattle secured a 13-10 victory over New England in the NFL's opening week, despite losing quarterback Sam Darnold to a hip injury early in the game. Darnold was sacked on the team's first drive, limped off the field and was later listed as out, having completed only one pass for 13 yards to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Drew Lock stepped in and finished the game, completing 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completed 22 of 33 attempts for 178 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. His fourth-quarter interception on a deep pass to Romeo Doubs was the decisive turnover. Seattle capitalized with a 45-yard touchdown reception by Smith-Njigba to tie the game, followed by a 26-yard field goal by Jason Myers that gave the Seahawks a three-point lead.
"We’re disappointed to lose Sam Darnold, but we’ll regroup and focus on the next game," a Seahawks spokesperson said.
Patriots receiver A.J. Brown also left the contest with an ankle injury. Seattle will travel to Arizona for its next game, while New England hosts Pittsburgh in Week 2.
