Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold exits season opener with hip injury
Seattle's starting quarterback Sam Darnold left the opening game after a hip injury on his first drive and will miss the remainder of the contest.
Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold was forced out of the NFL's season-opening primetime game after sustaining a right-hip injury on his sixth snap. The injury occurred during a sack on the opening drive against the New England Patriots, and Darnold walked off the field without assistance before being evaluated in a sideline privacy tent and later undergoing X-rays. He was listed as questionable and subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Backup quarterback Drew Lock took over for Seattle, but the offense struggled and trailed 7-0 at halftime. > "We’ve got faith in Drew," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said in a halftime interview with NBC.
Darnold, who helped lead Seattle to a Super Bowl victory last season, joins a small group of active quarterbacks with championship rings and is the only player to win a title with his fifth team or later. He also matched Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to record 14 wins as a starter in consecutive seasons.
