Epsilon Perseid meteor shower peaks late Sept. 9 into early Sept. 10

摘要

Astronomers say the Epsilon Perseid meteor shower will reach its maximum between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. local time on Sept. 9-10, with dark skies aided by a new moon.

The Epsilon Perseid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak late on Sept. 9 and continue into the early hours of Sept. 10. The International Meteor Organization lists the maximum activity between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. local time, with observers likely to see up to five meteors per hour, primarily in the northern hemisphere.

The timing coincides with a new moon on Sept. 10, which should provide darker skies and reduce lunar interference, making faint meteors easier to detect. The shower will remain active through Sept. 21.

"The September new moon near midnight on Sept. 10 promises exceptionally dark skies," a spokesperson for the International Meteor Organization said.

Stargazers are advised to find a location away from city lights and to allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for the best viewing conditions.
