Gauff Overcomes Match Points to Reach US Open Semi-Final Against Rybakina

Résumé

Coco Gauff rallied from a set down to defeat Mirra Andreeva, saving two match points and advancing to a US Open semi-final where she will face Elena Rybakina.

Coco Gauff saved two match points and came from a set down to beat Mirra Andreeva 2-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-2, securing a place in the US Open women's singles semi-final against Elena Rybakina, the incoming world number one. Gauff, the tournament's fourth seed, said she was inspired by compatriot Frances Tiafoe’s comeback earlier in the day.

The victory marks Gauff’s second consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearance and her first in New York since winning the title in 2023. It also continues a rare occurrence in which the top four seeds have all reached the semi-finals of a major, a feat not seen since Wimbledon 2009.

Rybakina, the second seed, also advanced after a three-set win over Zheng Qinwen, which guarantees her the world number one ranking for the first time in her career.

Andreeva, who led early in the match, committed 14 unforced errors in the final set and expressed frustration after a racquet outburst, saying she had been holding her emotions for too long. Former British number one Annabel Croft praised Gauff’s resilience, noting the American’s shift from defensive play to full control as the match progressed.
