Ukrainian drones strike industrial site in Russia's Arctic gas hub

Résumé

Ukrainian drones reached the Yamal gas region, igniting a fire at an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, marking the deepest strike inside Russia since the war began.

Ukrainian drones flew more than 3,300 km to the Yamal gas region in Russia's Arctic north on Wednesday, causing a fire at an industrial site in the city of Novy Urengoy, officials said. Regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov reported that Russian air defenses intercepted the attack but debris from the drones ignited the blaze; no casualties were reported and the extent of damage is still being assessed.

The strike was described by United24 as the deepest Ukrainian drone operation inside Russia since the invasion began in February 2022. Novy Urengoy lies in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, which produces about 80% of Russia's natural gas.

A Ukrainian defense firm, Fire Point, posted a statement claiming the operation covered more than 3,300 km and successfully hit the target. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces struck additional targets around the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, including a naval base and oil-loading facilities, where Russian authorities reported four deaths, including a child, and 29 injuries.

The incident occurs amid heightened long-range attacks by both sides and renewed diplomatic efforts by the United States to restart negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Russian officials said separate drone attacks that day hit a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, killing two civilians, and a separate wave of strikes on Kyiv resulted in one death and 14 injuries.
