Practical Magic 2 Projected to Overtake Spider-Man: Brand New Day at Box Office

Summary

Warner Bros. expects the fantasy sequel Practical Magic 2 to debut at number one domestically, ending Spider-Man: Brand New Day's six-week run.

Warner Bros. forecasts that the sequel Practical Magic 2, starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, will earn between $30 million and $40 million from roughly 4,000 North American theaters in its opening weekend, enough to claim the top spot and end the six-week reign of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The studio also projects an additional $18 million to $25 million from 77 international territories, which would bring global opening totals to $48 million-$65 million against a production budget of $75 million.

The original Practical Magic, based on Alice Hoffman's novel, performed poorly at the box office but later developed a cult following. The sequel, directed by Susanne Bier, is set 25 years after the first film and follows the daughters of the original witchy sisters as they investigate family secrets. Returning cast members include Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, while Joey King and Maisie Williams join the ensemble.

Critical response has been mixed; Variety critic Todd Gilchrist described the film as “cumbersome and overlong.” The review may affect the movie’s performance beyond its opening weekend.

In addition to Practical Magic 2, Disney is releasing the music documentary Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger, which is expected to open with $5 million-$7 million from 1,200 domestic theaters. The film features new interview footage with Liam and Noel Gallagher.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to draw strong earnings, having generated $923 million domestically and $2.4 billion worldwide, positioning it to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
