Republicans convene in Texas for Trump-focused midterm gathering amid looming election

摘要

Republican leaders gathered in Dallas for a two-day convention organized at Donald Trump's request, while the party prepares for the November midterm elections and contemplates its future after his presidency.

Republican officials and allies assembled in Dallas, Texas, for a two-night convention that was planned at President Donald Trump's urging. Trump is scheduled to appear on both evenings and will also watch the proceedings from a private suite, underscoring his continued prominence within the party.

The event comes less than two months before voters decide control of Congress for the final two years of Trump's term. Party strategists acknowledge that the upcoming midterms pose a significant challenge, given Trump's low approval ratings and the possibility that some Republicans may distance themselves from the festivities.

“It’s hard to imagine politics without him,” said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, adding that the party will eventually need to adjust to a post-Trump landscape.

The convention highlighted the deep integration of Trump’s brand into Republican rallies, from his signature red hats to merchandise and even a golden statue displayed at previous conservative gatherings. Artist Jon McNaughton, known for his Trump-themed paintings, said the former president is becoming an “archetype” comparable to historic figures such as Washington and Lincoln.

Trump has hinted at concerns about his legacy, telling New York Magazine that his building projects in Washington are intended to leave a lasting mark after he leaves office. At a recent event, he asked attendees, “Will you please remember that I did it?”

Party insiders note that Trump is likely to influence the selection of his successor, with potential candidates including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Veteran GOP strategist Doug Heye warned that assuming Trump will become a typical “lame-duck” president is unrealistic.

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said, “No one can get crowds like Trump does. If you can get Trump to continue to do them, then that’s a huge thing.”

The convention also marked a shift in some GOP circles; Trump did not attend this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, prompting Schlapp to observe that his absence allowed other dynamics to emerge that are usually suppressed by his dominant presence.

Looking ahead, Trump’s political operation plans a nationwide tour with more than 30 rallies in key battleground areas. The MAGA Inc. super PAC, which reported $400 million in cash last month, has already allocated $10 million for advertising supporting Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton. Party chairman Joe Gruters said Trump “completely transformed what the Republican Party is” and will remain a central figure regardless of the midterm outcome.

The gathering underscores both the current reliance on Trump’s personal brand and the strategic calculations Republicans face as they prepare for the midterms and the eventual transition of party leadership.
