Bucs lock QB Baker Mayfield in three-year, $165 million extension
Quarterback Baker Mayfield agreed to a three-year extension worth $165 million with $110 million in new guarantees, keeping him with Tampa Bay through the 2029 season.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield has signed a three-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to reports from ESPN and NFL.com. The deal adds $110 million in new guarantees, bringing the total guaranteed amount to roughly $150 million and tying Mayfield to the team through the 2029 season. The contract’s average annual value of $55 million places him among a group of quarterbacks that includes Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love and Matthew Stafford, and behind only Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott in per-year earnings.
"The agreement includes $110 million in new guarantees and a $40 million guarantee for the 2026 season," the report noted.
The extension follows a brief period in which Mayfield indicated he would not negotiate after training camp began and intended to play out his existing three-year, $100 million contract. Tampa Bay, which has a history of allowing key players to complete contract years before re-signing them, opted to secure Mayfield before free agency. The team previously offered a two-year deal with an average value around $50 million, which Mayfield described as “not appealing.”
Mayfield, 31, posted back-to-back 4,000-yard passing seasons in 2023 and 2024 and earned Pro Bowl alternate nods in both years. He posted career highs in 2024 with 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and a 71.4 % completion rate. The Buccaneers gave him a $30 million guarantee for his 2026 salary a year in advance and hired former Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson as offensive coordinator.
The contract’s structure, including future vesting dates and potential void years, has not been fully disclosed. Analysts note that the extension provides the Buccaneers with rare quarterback continuity, a factor that could influence coaching decisions after the team’s 8-9 finish last season.
