Mother alleges measles exposure of infant at UPMC Children's Hospital

A Pittsburgh mother says her 2-month-old daughter was among ten children exposed to measles at UPMC Children's Hospital and claims the facility failed to provide timely guidance.

A mother from the Pittsburgh area reported that her two-month-old infant was exposed to measles during a routine appointment at UPMC Children’s Hospital, part of a cluster involving ten children. The exposure was confirmed by the hospital six days after the visit, prompting the mother to seek an antibody injection for her baby.

She said hospital staff were unable to answer questions about quarantine procedures or the incubation period, directing her to contact public health authorities instead. After multiple calls, an infectious-control representative informed her that the family should have been placed under quarantine for three days before the hospital became aware, and that a total 28-day quarantine was required.

The mother criticized the hospital for not notifying her to avoid public areas, noting that she waited in a crowded waiting room while potentially infectious. She added that the infant remains in quarantine while monitoring for symptoms that could appear up to 21 days after exposure.

UPMC has not responded to requests for comment.
