U.S. 10-Year Treasury Yield Near 5% as Bond Selloff Raises Market Concerns

सारांश

The 10-year Treasury yield has risen to around 5%, prompting analysis of its impact on corporate borrowing costs, stock valuations and the broader economy.

The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note has climbed to near 5%, a level not seen for almost two decades, as a bond selloff that began after the Iran conflict continues. Analysts note that higher yields could increase borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, potentially weighing on corporate earnings, especially for firms financing artificial-intelligence and data-center projects.

Higher Treasury yields also tighten the spread between investment-grade debt and government bonds, leaving investors with limited protection if credit conditions deteriorate. Some market observers point to the ratio of the 30-year Treasury yield to stock dividend yields, which is at its highest since the 2000 dot-com bust, as an indicator that equity valuations may be vulnerable to adverse news.

Despite the rise in yields, the yield-to-GDP ratio remains favorable; nominal GDP growth in the first two quarters exceeded 6%, keeping borrowing costs below the economy’s growth rate. Economists say this cushion allows the government to run larger deficits without immediate debt sustainability concerns, though the margin narrows if yields continue to outpace growth.

Real rates on long-term Treasury inflation-protected securities have risen to 2.92% from 2.55% at the end of last year, reflecting solid economic expansion rather than inflation fears. "The recent rise in long-end Treasury yields has been driven predominantly by real rates," said Gennadiy Goldberg, head of U.S. Rates Strategy at TD Securities USA.

The higher cost of financing is also affecting merger-and-acquisition activity. Investors report a slowdown in deal momentum and a willingness among buyers to negotiate lower prices, as the expense of financing transactions rises.

Overall, while the yield increase signals strong demand for capital, it introduces new challenges for corporate financing, equity markets and fiscal policy.
