Trump and Putin discuss Ukraine conflict in hour-long phone call

Résumé

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a one-hour phone conversation described as constructive, while U.S. envoys continue diplomatic efforts to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a conversation that lasted about an hour, according to Putin’s foreign-affairs adviser Yury Ushakov. Ushakov said the leaders had a “constructive and quite frank” discussion that covered the ongoing war in Ukraine and Russia’s military objectives.

"An objective and thorough analysis of the ongoing special military operation and generally our view of prospective battlefield advances and the achievement of the special military operation’s goals and tasks was given," Ushakov said.

Ushakov added that Putin rejected concerns about future attacks on Europe, emphasizing that Russia has no aggressive plans toward the continent.

"It was underlined that we don’t have any aggressive plans regarding Europe," he said.

The call followed recent meetings by U.S. special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss a proposal aimed at ending the conflict. Zelenskyy thanked the U.S. delegation for their visit and stressed the importance of ending the war.

"It is very important that the delegation has arrived to see us. We have been waiting a long time for Steve and Jared, Witkoff and Kushner. To us, it is very important to do everything so that this war ends," Zelenskyy said.

No immediate breakthrough was reported, and fighting resumed after a brief weekend pause. Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes in Kyiv killed at least five civilians and wounded 25, while Russian authorities reported casualties in the Bryansk and Kursk regions and in Crimea.

The White House did not comment on the phone call. Trump has said ending the war is a priority of his administration, though his statements on the timeline and approach have varied.
