Canada Plans Faster Diversification as U.S. Tariffs Target $20 Billion of Goods

Résumé

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will accelerate efforts to reduce reliance on the United States after Washington imposed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of American products.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the country will speed up measures to lessen its economic dependence on the United States following the implementation of U.S. tariffs on roughly $20 billion of American goods. In a prerecorded video, Carney said four decades of deep integration have left Canada overly reliant on its southern neighbor and that standing still would be more costly than the short-term pain of diversification.

Carney said the government will focus on investment, infrastructure and expanding trade with partners he described as "more reliable," adding that the current reliance on a single market "that time is over." He defended Canada’s matching tariffs, stating, "> We can’t let American goods into Canada tariff-free while they charge our companies to export to them," and emphasized that the measures aim to protect Canadian workers rather than escalate the dispute.

The tariffs, which cover steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment at rates of 15%, 25% or 50%, affect about 6% of the $333.6 billion the United States exported to Canada last year. Canada’s trade minister’s office confirmed that officials from both countries continue informal discussions, although formal negotiations have not resumed.

Analysts noted that neither side appears eager to make the first overture, with Canada’s high approval rating giving the prime minister leeway to pursue diversification while keeping diplomatic channels open.
