Trump warns Bombardier to shift production to the United States or lose market access

Résumé

President Donald Trump said Bombardier must begin manufacturing in the U.S. to continue selling its aircraft there, amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada.

President Donald Trump warned Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier that it would be barred from selling its planes in the United States unless it started production on American soil. The comment was posted on his Truth Social platform, where he said the company must build in the U.S. to access the market.

Trump has previously targeted Bombardier, threatening in January to impose a 50% tariff on all aircraft imported from Canada and to decertify the firm’s jets after Canada declined to certify certain U.S.-made Gulfstream models.

The dispute is part of a broader trade conflict that intensified after negotiations on a duty-free agreement collapsed. In late August, the United States imposed 50% tariffs on roughly C$28 billion of Canadian goods, prompting Canada to announce reciprocal measures covering about C$27.6 billion of U.S. imports, including steel, aluminum, dairy and other products.

"If they want our market, they must build here," Trump wrote.

Bombardier, founded in 1942 and entering the aerospace sector in 1986 after acquiring Canadair, has become a notable producer of business jets such as the Challenger series.
