Five Killed in Miami Cargo Plane Overrun After Striking Cleaning Van and SUV

Résumé

The National Transportation Safety Board said the victims were occupants of a cleaning-crew van and a nearby SUV after an Amazon-branded cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board said five people who died when an Amazon-branded cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport were inside a white Ford van used by a contract cleaning company and in a Toyota SUV traveling on a nearby road. Seven people were in the van at the time of the impact; the board did not specify how many were injured or killed.

"The primary focus is on the recovery of the victims," NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told reporters, adding that the investigation could proceed after the recovery effort.

The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air, was returning from San Juan, Puerto Rico after completing two prior flights that day. Upon landing, the aircraft overshot the runway, struck navigational equipment, then collided with the van, breached a perimeter fence, and hit the SUV on Northwest 67th Avenue before coming to rest on grass near a fenced area used for robotaxis.

Two crew members were aboard the aircraft, and the pilot and co-pilot were initially trapped inside the fuselage. Miami-Dade Fire Chief Raied Jadallah confirmed the crew members were rescued, and a cellphone video showed a crew member exiting the aircraft after the crash.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and 21 Air CEO Keith Winters said the airline is cooperating with federal investigators.

Investigators recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders and plan to examine air traffic control communications and aircraft performance. The NTSB expects to remain on site for at least a week and has asked the public to submit any relevant photos or videos.
