Canada to Impose $20 Billion in Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods

सारांश

Canada will enforce tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. imports, covering roughly 6% of annual U.S. exports to Canada, as trade talks stalled and tensions with the United States rise.

Canada announced that retaliatory tariffs will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, targeting hundreds of U.S. products such as aluminum foil, raincoats and cheese. The measures, described by Canadian officials as matching a recent U.S. levy round, cover roughly $20 billion in goods, about 6% of the United States' annual exports to Canada, according to Census Bureau data.

U.S. lawmakers from border states, including Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, warned that the dispute could hurt local businesses and consumers. The tariffs follow a breakdown in negotiations last month and a new set of U.S. duties imposed earlier in September.

President Donald Trump has signaled a possible escalation, threatening to block sales of Bombardier aircraft unless the company moves production to the United States and pledging higher tariffs on Canadian cars and auto parts.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded on social media, emphasizing that the lake bordering the two nations remains “Lake Ontario” and urging the United States to engage in serious negotiations rather than “memes” and “shade.”

The new duties add to a broader trade dispute that, while currently limited to a subset of goods, could expand and deepen economic pain for both countries if further measures are taken.
