Family of Celeste Rivas urges death penalty if suspect convicted

Résumé

The relatives of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez said they support capital punishment for the suspect, while prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek it.

The family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez said they would back the death penalty if the suspect, known as D4vd, is convicted of the teenager's murder. In a statement to the New York Post, they expressed that the ultimate decision rests with the courts and a higher power. District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed that the death penalty remains a possible charge, though no final decision has been made.

David Anthony Burke, who performs under the name D4vd, faces a first-degree murder charge with special circumstances, making him eligible for capital punishment. Prosecutors allege he killed Celeste after she threatened to reveal an alleged illegal sexual relationship and to damage his music career. They say he dismembered the victim and concealed her remains in bags later found in his Tesla at a Hollywood impound lot.

A judge ordered Burke to stand trial in July following a five-day preliminary hearing. He entered a not-guilty plea after his private counsel withdrew and a public defender was appointed. The family has repeatedly called for justice for Celeste and indicated they believe the death penalty would be an appropriate measure.
