Trump Administration Cancels $679 Million in Offshore Wind Project Funding
The U.S. Department of Transportation has rescinded $679 million in federal funding for 12 offshore wind projects across 11 states, redirecting the funds to other infrastructure initiatives.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has rescinded $679 million in federal funding allocated to 12 offshore wind projects across 11 states. This includes $435 million for a floating wind farm in Northern California and $47 million for an offshore wind project in Maryland. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the funds will be redirected to upgrade ports and other infrastructure where possible.
"Wasteful, wind projects are using resources that could otherwise go towards revitalizing America's maritime industry," Duffy said.
This decision is part of a broader effort by the administration to reduce support for renewable energy projects. The Energy Department also announced the withdrawal of a $716 million loan guarantee intended to upgrade transmission infrastructure for an offshore wind project in New Jersey. Additionally, construction of the nearly complete Revolution Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut has been halted pending a review of national security concerns.
Critics argue that these actions could negatively impact job creation and energy affordability. California Representative Jared Huffman described the funding cancellation as "outrageous" and expressed concern over the potential loss of thousands of jobs and the hindrance to providing affordable, reliable power to consumers.
The administration's recent moves reflect a shift towards prioritizing fossil fuels over renewable energy sources, aligning with President Trump's commitment to restoring U.S. "energy dominance" in the global market.
