Spider-Man: Brand New Day Leads Domestic Box Office for Sixth Weekend

Résumé

Sony's Spider-Man: Brand New Day topped the U.S. box office for a sixth straight weekend, earning $18 million over the weekend and projected $23.3 million through Labor Day, while the summer season posted the second-largest total earnings on record.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained the top-grossing film in the United States for a sixth consecutive weekend, pulling in $18 million from Friday to Sunday and an estimated $23.3 million through the Labor Day holiday. The film’s cumulative domestic total now stands at $923 million, positioning it to overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing domestic release. Worldwide, the fourth Spider-Man installment has generated $2.4 billion, ranking third among all-time global box-office earners.

The Labor Day weekend concluded what industry analysts describe as the strongest summer box-office season since the pandemic, with domestic ticket sales of $4.73 billion from May through early September, the second-largest summer total on record. Major releases such as The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, and The Devil Wears Prada 2, along with indie titles like Obsession and Backrooms, contributed to the robust performance.

"This summer could signal a meaningful turning point for movie theaters," said Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak, adding that the results underscore the unique appeal of the theatrical experience.

New releases over the holiday weekend struggled to gain traction. Paramount’s By Any Means opened fourth with $7.4 million, while Lionsgate’s Fall 2: Deadpoint and A24’s Onslaught earned $2.3 million and $1.8 million respectively, each posting modest or negative audience reception scores. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey secured the No. 2 spot with $13 million, and the animated Coyote vs. Acme held third place with $11.3 million in its second weekend.

Industry observers note that the upcoming fall slate—including Practical Magic 2, Digger, a Resident Evil reboot, and the Verity adaptation—will need to sustain the momentum generated by the summer’s strong ticket sales.
