Amazon Cancels Nicolas Cage-Led Spider-Noir After One Season
Amazon has discontinued the Emmy-nominated series Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage, citing viewership that fell short of the show's high production costs.
Amazon announced the cancellation of the series Spider-Noir, which starred Nicolas Cage as a 1930s private detective who also assumes the role of Spider-Man. The show, adapted from the Marvel comic "Spider-Man Noir," was produced in collaboration with the team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and was the first project to emerge from a Sony-Amazon content agreement.
Spider-Noir received a 92 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90 percent audience score, and it earned 11 Emmy nominations, the most for any Amazon Prime series in 2026. Nielsen reported 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the first six weeks after its debut.
"The series was filmed in both black-and-white and color, allowing viewers to choose how 'noir' they wanted the experience to be," a production source said.
Industry sources suggest the decision was driven by the series' viewership not matching its elevated production expenses. The show’s format, which let audiences toggle visual styles, contributed to higher costs.
The cancellation follows an earlier Sony-Amazon partnership that did not progress beyond development, and both companies continue to explore additional superhero projects, with at least one concept reportedly close to receiving a series order.
