Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover throws four touchdowns in debut despite facial injury
Transfer quarterback Josh Hoover led Indiana to a 52-16 win over North Texas, completing 13 of 16 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns while playing through a facial laceration.
Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover threw four touchdown passes in his first start, helping the Hoosiers defeat North Texas 52-16. Hoover completed 13 of 16 attempts for 231 yards and posted a 285 efficiency rating, the highest for the team since former star Fernando Mendoza. He sustained a facial laceration after a helmet impact in the second quarter but remained in the game, later stating, "I just got a little cut there. It looked way worse than it felt. I didn’t even know it was bleeding like that," and > "It’s a nose," when asked about the injury.
Coach Tom Cignetti praised Hoover’s performance, saying, "I thought he played well," and added that the quarterback’s zero-turnover effort aligns with Indiana’s tradition of strong ball security. Hoover also showcased mobility with a 25-yard run-pass to tight end Brock Schott, a play he described as risky but successful.
Indiana’s receiving corps contributed significantly, with Charlie Becker catching two touchdowns and four passes for 64 yards, while transfer Nick Marsh made a one-handed catch for the opening score. Hoover noted the depth of the receiving group, saying the team has "a lot of guys who can really go" and that any player can make big plays.
The win marked Indiana’s highest point total in a season opener in 13 years. Defensive coach remarks indicated the unit was off-balance against North Texas, which posted 152 rushing yards, the most allowed since the previous season’s opener. The Hoosiers will look to improve defensively ahead of upcoming games against Howard and Western Kentucky.
