Jay-Z Opens London Shows with Beyoncé Birthday Tribute and Surprise Fugees Reunion
Jay-Z began his two-night London concerts with a birthday salute to Beyoncé, featuring guest appearances by DJ Khaled, Giggs and a surprise Fugees performance.
Jay-Z kicked off his two-night engagement at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on September 4 with a birthday tribute to Beyoncé, who turned 45. He paused his set to sing "Happy Birthday" while fireworks illuminated the arena and Beyoncé appeared on the stadium’s giant screens, waving from a VIP suite.
The concerts mark the rapper's first solo headline shows in the United Kingdom in nearly 13 years, celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt. Sir Idris Elba delivered the spoken introduction from Jay-Z's 2007 album American Gangster before the performer launched into a set that spanned his early material and later hits.
Guest appearances added to the event’s star power: DJ Khaled joined for "God Did" alongside British rapper Giggs, who also performed his own single "Talking the Hardest." Later, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean surprised the audience with a brief Fugees reunion, performing "Ready or Not," "Killing Me Softly" and "Fu-Gee-La."
A roster of celebrities, including David Beckham, Michael B. Jordan and producer Rick Rubin, were spotted in the crowd. Jay-Z will return to the venue on September 5 before the tour moves to Paris's Stade de France on September 10 and concludes with two shows at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium in late October.
