Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets Record as Fastest Film to Reach $900 Million Domestically

Resumen

The superhero film hit $900 million in the U.S. box office in 36 days, surpassing the previous record held by 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' and remains number one in its sixth weekend.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day added $3.9 million on Friday, taking its domestic total past $900 million. The milestone was reached in 36 days, making it the quickest film to do so and breaking the 50-day record set by 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Marvel-Sony release is projected to earn about $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, which would lift its U.S. gross to roughly $922 million. Analysts expect the movie to eventually exceed $936 million and overtake The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time.

Paramount’s By Any Means and A24’s Onslaught opened on Friday but could not displace Spider-Man from the top spot. By Any Means earned $2.7 million on its first day, placing fourth behind Spider-Man, The Odyssey and Coyote vs. Acme, and is expected to make $8.5 million through the long weekend. The 1960s thriller stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg and is directed by Elegance Bratton.

Onslaught brought in $770,000 on Friday and is on pace for about $2.3 million by Monday. The action film features Adria Arjona as a sniper protecting her daughter from genetically engineered soldiers and is directed by Adam Wingard.

Universal’s The Odyssey earned $3 million on Friday, moving it to second place and projected to reach $588 million domestically by Monday. Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme collected $2.6 million on Friday and is expected to finish the weekend with $15.3 million, bringing its total to $37.8 million. 20th Century’s The Dog Stars continued to struggle, earning $720,000 on Friday and projected to finish its second weekend with $3.7 million.
