Russian Missile and Drone Strikes on Kyiv Result in Civilian Casualties and Damage to EU Facilities
A significant Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv has resulted in civilian deaths and damage to European Union facilities, prompting international condemnation.
A substantial Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv during the night of August 27–28 resulted in at least 21 civilian deaths, including four children, and significant damage to infrastructure, including the European Union's delegation building. The attack, one of the most intense since the conflict began, involved approximately 600 drones and 31 missiles, with Ukrainian air defenses intercepting the majority.
European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the strikes, urging Russia to cease targeting civilian infrastructure and engage in peace negotiations. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that such aggression must not go unanswered, hinting at potential joint EU measures.
In response to the attack, European defense leaders convened in Copenhagen, discussing increased pressure on Russia, including seizing frozen assets, intensifying sanctions, and boosting military aid to Ukraine. The United Nations Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting to address the situation.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted Russian oil refineries, leading to fuel shortages and price surges in various Russian regions, including the Far East and Crimea. These attacks have disrupted domestic fuel supplies, forced export reconfigurations, and amplified global market volatility.
