Frankfort mother charged with murder after toddler found dead in basement

Résumé

Corie A. Walsh has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son was discovered dead from ligature compression, and she was found injured in a bathtub at the same home.

Police were called to a Frankfort residence on Brook Stone Court after a neighbor reported an injured toddler. The neighbor was performing CPR on the 2-year-old, who had been found hanging from a basement rafter with a ligature around his neck. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital, and an autopsy later confirmed death by asphyxia due to ligature compression.

Corie A. Walsh, 40, was discovered in an upstairs bathroom, fully clothed and surrounded by blood-stained water, with cuts on her wrists and thighs. She told officers she had attempted suicide and that she killed her son because he was “the devil” and “the anti-Christ.” Walsh has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and is being held for medical treatment.

Prosecutors noted that an infant and two school-aged children were also present in the home at the time but were unharmed. Walsh’s husband was out of state during the incident. Investigators are examining Walsh’s phone activity, which reportedly included discussion of a recent high-profile murder trial involving another mother.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy," Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis said in a statement.

"Everybody was in shock, and this is just a horrible thing in the community," Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle said, urging residents to withhold judgment until investigators release full findings.

The investigation remains ongoing.
