USS Abraham Lincoln crew lands in Pattaya, boosting local businesses amid deployment fatigue

Resumen

Sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln spent a day ashore in Pattaya, Thailand, where they sought basic comforts and contributed to a surge in sales for local retailers and restaurants.

Sailors from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in Pattaya, Thailand, for a brief shore leave after a 286-day deployment. Many chose low-key activities such as pedicures at a local nail salon, purchasing clothing and souvenirs, and eating at fast-food outlets.

The crew’s presence sparked a noticeable increase in sales for retailers and eateries, with several shops reporting sales spikes of up to three times their usual daily revenue. Local officials estimate that if each sailor spends roughly $100-$150 per day, the visit could generate about 100 million baht (approximately $3 million).

Crew members described the deployment as challenging. One sailor, who asked to remain anonymous, said the long period at sea made simple comforts on land feel especially valuable. Another sailor, identified as Adam, said the lack of fresh produce and the need to eat uncooked meat and potatoes were among the hardest aspects of life aboard.

Pattaya’s mayor, Poramet Ngampichet, noted the economic benefit of the visit, while some small vendors reported limited sales to the sailors, reflecting the short duration of the stopover. Local authorities have advised service members to avoid certain nightlife areas after dark, though the main entertainment district remains open to visitors.

The city’s economy has historically been linked to U.S. military tourism, a relationship that began during the Vietnam-era R&R program and continues to shape Pattaya’s hospitality sector.
