Caitlin Clark entered the game in the first quarter after Coach Kara Lawson chose a veteran starting lineup for Team USA's opening match at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

Team USA began its FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup campaign against China without rookie guard Caitlin Clark in the starting lineup. Coach Kara Lawson opted for veterans Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young at the guard positions, while Breanna Stewart, Kahleah Copper and Napheesa Collier completed the five.

Clark joined the game midway through the first quarter, contributing a layup, four assists and a rebound as the United States built an early lead. Young accounted for seven of the team's first 20 points.

"She is just so competitive, skilled, sees the game at this high level in terms of her ability to be anticipatory, with her passes and with her shots, and her belief and confidence in what she can do is terrific," Lawson said, referencing her first coaching experience with Clark earlier this spring.

The decision to start seasoned players follows the squad's aim to defend its 2022 gold medal. Clark, who entered the tournament after a record-setting month in the WNBA, may earn a larger role as the competition progresses. Other bench players for the United States included Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
