Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez seeks guilty plea in Indianapolis stabbing case

Résumé

Mark Sanchez has filed a motion to plead guilty to a felony battery charge and several misdemeanors stemming from an October 2025 incident in Indianapolis, pending judicial approval.

Former NFL quarterback and ex-Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez filed a motion on Thursday in Marion County Superior Court to plead guilty to a felony battery charge and multiple misdemeanors, including unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, related to an October 2025 stabbing outside an Indianapolis hotel. A judge must accept the plea before sentencing can proceed.

The incident occurred while Sanchez was in town covering a Colts-vs-Raiders game. Police records state that Sanchez confronted 69-year-old truck driver Perry Tole after the driver backed his truck into a hotel loading dock. According to the affidavit, Tole sprayed Sanchez with pepper spray, after which Tole drew a knife and stabbed Sanchez two or three times. Sanchez was hospitalized with wounds to his upper right torso.

Sanchez’s brother and legal adviser, Nick Sanchez Jr., said the plea represents "a positive development" and noted ongoing discussions about a related civil matter. The former quarterback’s jury trial, which had been postponed multiple times, was scheduled to begin Tuesday before the plea motion was filed.

Attorney Matt Golitko, representing Tole, said the parties have had "constructive and professional conversations" and are working toward an amicable resolution of the civil lawsuit.

Sanchez, who retired from the NFL in 2019 after a ten-year career, was dismissed by Fox Sports following the incident.
