Nvidia confirmed a $12.93 billion purchase of AI platform Hugging Face, aiming to keep the service open and boost its AI ecosystem, with the deal expected to close by mid-2027.

Nvidia announced on Thursday that it will acquire the open-weight AI platform Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion. The transaction, detailed in a company press release, is slated to close in the first half of 2027 pending regulatory approval. Hugging Face hosts more than 3 million models used by over 18 million developers, researchers and creators, and serves more than 200 000 companies.

In a statement, Nvidia said the platform will remain "an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem" and that the company will continue to support open-weight and open-source AI models. Nvidia’s enterprise computing general manager Justin Boitano said the firm believes a healthy mix of closed and open models enables developers to train and run models at scale, while providing hardware and cloud options that benefit Nvidia.

CEO Jensen Huang posted on X that open models "strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty," allowing a broad range of users to build and customize AI solutions.

Analysts noted the acquisition positions Nvidia as more than a chip supplier, turning it into a broader AI platform. Barbara Doran, CEO of BD8 and Nvidia investor, said the $13 billion price tag is modest relative to Nvidia’s projected near-$200 billion free cash flow for fiscal 2027. Nvidia’s shares rose about 2 % in early trading following the announcement.
